Our pride and joy for thirteen years

In March of 1995, my husband and I adopted Gemini (who was 6 years old) from Animal Friends.
I remember when I first saw her, scared and barking, standing in the back of the cage. We tried to talk to her but she was frightened, as people had not been very kind to her before she was rescued by Animal Friends. We were told that she was found in a house with 22 other dogs and had never been outside. She was horribly abused, including being shot at with a pellet gun of which the pellets were still in her hips when we had x-rays taken years later.
My husband and I went home and had long discussions about her, knowing that it would take time and patience to help her feel secure and happy. We went back a few days later and adopted her. I carried her out of the building, as she was afraid to walk on the grass, and we drove home in the car with her shaking the whole time.
This is a happy story because in time she came around and was very happy, running around the yard and trying to “herd” us as she was a sheppard/sheltie mix. Although she never forgot her past, she knew that we loved her and would keep her safe. She loved to go to Grandma and Grandpa’s house and they spoiled her just like a human grandchild. They graciously watched her when we went away and sometimes I don’t think that they wanted to give her back!
She was our pride and joy for thirteen years. I loved her more that anything in the world. Gemini passed away on Monday, April 7 2008 at the age of nineteen. The house is empty and quiet now, and her sister the cat Tabitha misses her very much. I will forever be grateful that I had the chance to know and love her and I know that she is in a better place. I want everyone to know that adopting an older dog is just as rewarding as having a puppy and I would do it again in a second. May my beloved “gemmy” rest in peace. I know that we will meet again someday.
In Loving Memory of Gemini,
