“Man Arrested; Confessed to Feeding Broken Glass to Dogs”
October 10, 2008—Brett Kolarik, age 41 of Pittsburgh’s North Side, turned himself in to Zone 3 Pittsburgh Police at 9:30 am today. Officer Christine Luffey and Animal Friends’ Humane Officer Katie Waters secured a warrant for his arrest after he confessed to feeding meatballs filled with broken glass and small nails to two dogs.
Mr. Kolarik is charged with cruelty to animal charges for the torture and maiming of the two dogs, which belong to his neighbor, Debra Rogers. Frustrated by what he considered to be nuisance barking, Mr. Kolarik allegedly fed the meatballs to Shadow, her purebred Husky and Pepper, her beagle.
The dogs required lifesaving surgical removal of the glass and nails. They were treated by Dr. Rexford and Dr. Payne of PVSEC and are recovering at home with their owner. They are believed to be making a successful recovery.
Mr. Kolarik faces up to two years in prison for each count of animal cruelty, a large fine, and restitution for damages, which total nearly $4,000.
Animal Friends’ Humane Officer Katie Waters is available for interviews at 412.403.1526.
