AF127 Children’s Presentations and Shelter Tours at Animal Friends

We accept student groups of five or more children with an advance reservation.

What the visit includes:

  • Kindergarteners: dog safety lesson, dog interaction with a certified therapy dog, guided tour of cat and rabbit areas; 60 minutes.
  • Grades 1-2: dog safety lesson, dog interaction with a certified therapy dog, guided tour of dog, cat and rabbit areas; 75 minutes.
  • Grades 3-8: dog safety lesson, dog interaction with a certified therapy dog, importance of spaying/neutering, responsible pet care, guided tour of dog, cat and rabbit areas; 75-90 minutes.
  • Grades 5-12: brief dog safety lesson, interaction with a certified therapy dog, importance of spaying/neutering, guided tour of dog, cat and rabbit areas; 75-90 minutes. Optional: additional 30 minutes of our Enrichment Workshop – make gifts for the animals and learn how the gifts meet the animals' needs.

Our tours are set up to host a maximum of 30 students.

If you are a pre-k group, we'll visit your classroom with a therapy dog. Our free 30-minute dog safety presentations are loved by kids and teachers! Preschool teachers can submit a request.

Tours during the school day

Kids who are off school on Monday, Oct. 8 or Tuesday, Nov. 6, are invited to join us at Animal Friends for our Kindness Events. Guests make gifts for the animals, pet a therapy dog and enjoy a free guided tour. Families, scouts and community groups are welcome! Click here to register.

Otherwise, registration requests for tours held during the school day can be emailed to Dana Schultz, Education Coordinator, at DSchultz@ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org.

Tours and presentations held at Animal Friends during the day are offered on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 11:30 and 12:45 from October through May. Please submit your request at least two weeks in advance.

We are happy to offer multiple dates to a group if they would like to complete subsequent lessons and activities about responsible pet care, positive-based training, dog body language, etc.

Tuition for tours during the school day:

• One item per student from our supply drive list!
• Monetary donations are not required but are most welcome via our Kind Kids program. Kind Kids get to name an animal for every $75 donated.

New for 2018-2019!
We are offering 15-30-minute virtual field trips for grades PreK-12. Students will enjoy a guided tour of our adoptable cats and rabbits, meet a featured adoptable animal via the monitor and participate in Q and A time. Virtual field trips are available from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Tours after school or on Saturdays

Please note that our after-school and Saturday time slots are in great demand. A $20 non-refundable deposit is now required to schedule your group for an after-school or Saturday time slot.

Each time slot can accommodate up to 30 students. Groups of less than 30 students will be sharing their time slot with other groups.

Guidelines for after-school and Saturday programs:

  • Groups must attend with a number of children and chaperones that is indicated within the range of their reservation. We are unable to accommodate more chaperones than the number indicated below. 
             o Groups of 5-20 students must bring 2-5 chaperones. 
             o Groups of 21-30 students must bring 3-9 chaperones.

  • School-age siblings are welcome to attend as long as the number of children attending is within the range indicated for the reservation.
  • We offer dates/times based upon room availability, group size, and volunteer availability.
  • Please note that Saturday time slots in particular fill very quickly!  We have limited offerings of AF 127 on Saturdays because our Saturdays are bustling with scout events, Kids’ Club, children’s birthday parties, seasonal events, and dog-training classes for the public.
