For Our Veterans

Animal Friends was founded in 1943 to support soldiers leaving for World War II who had no place to safely leave their beloved animal companions. Today, we still stand committed to the brave men and women serving in our armed forces and the powerful bond they share with their pets.

We are proud to offer a series of targeted adoption programs to support – and thank – those who have served our country while also finding loving homes for the animals in our care.

We understand that companion animals can be the friends that many returning servicemen and -women need – especially those suffering from stress, depression and anxiety. And, these unique adoption options are tailored to the individual's current level of need and support so we can connect more vets with pets.

Pets for Vets – Pittsburgh Chapter

As an official chapter of the national Pets for Vets program, we are honored to provide carefully matched and trained companion pets to veterans who struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and issues related to unresolved stress.

We don’t simply place pets with veterans through this program. We work diligently with the veteran to identify and train a companion dog, cat or rabbit that will support his or her specific lifestyle and physical or emotional needs. Click here for more information.

Friends for Vets

Our Friends for Vets program runs concurrent with our standard adoption program providing a way to thank our veterans for their service in terms of a waived adoption donation and discounts in our Retail Store and to our Animal Friends University classes.

Additionally through Friends for Vets, opportunities for additional resources and support are available depending upon the individual need of the veteran or active service person. Click here to find out more.
