Adoption Counselors at Animal Friends

When It’s Time to See a Professional

Adding a new member to your family can pose a real dilemma and many questions. What kind of pet will fit into our family?  How can we make sure the new pet will get along with the humans and animals already in the household? Do we want an active playmate, a couch potato or something in-between? It can be enough to drive any family to a counselor—and adoption counselor, that is.

Animal Friends’ adoption counselors have both the heads and the hearts of matchmakers and are trained to be attuned to both your needs and those of our animals.  Their job, helping potential adopters find a pet who will be a much-loved forever family member, can be a challenging yet enjoyable one. Our counselors are familiar with the animals we have available for adoption, and they’ll know which ones will do well with children and other pets as well as the type of household the animals would be comfortable in.  Our counselors are also united in the desire that every animal find a home—the right home, in which pets and people form a happy family.

Our adoption desk can be a busy place, especially on weekends. As the most visible members of our team, Adoption counselors help visitors with general questions, discuss specific animals, and bring potential adopters and animals together in our get-acquainted rooms. If the first animal isn’t an ideal fit for a particular household, counselors can suggest other animals who might be and will work to find the perfect match. Our counselors share all the information we have about our animals, including behavioral and medical issues, and can explain the best way to smoothly introduce a new pet into your home.

At Animal Friends, we recognize that we can’t succeed in our mission to place pets in loving homes unless we provide support for their humans as well. After the adoption, our counselors can help with the transition of adding a new pet to your family and can give advice if problems arise. They contact each adopter several times in the important first few months to make sure things are going well, and they’re happy to accept calls if there are questions or concerns. They love to receive pictures and updates on former residents and share the joy of a match well-made.

We hope you’ll visit us soon, and stop by to say hello to our adoption staff.  With their help, you just may leave with a new best friend!
