Dog Adoption Floor Closure FAQs

Our Dog Adoption Floor recently underwent necessary renovations, and during this time, it was closed to public access. Our staff witnessed positive behavioral changes among our dog population and after careful thought and consideration, Animal Friends has decided to permanently close the Dog Adoption Floor for public viewing. We know one of the many reasons people visit Animal Friends is to see our adoptable animals and we want to assure you this is still possible!

There are six Multi-Dog Rooms viewable to the public which will house adoptable dogs on a rotating basis. In addition, a large-screen TV will display videos of our current adoptable dogs in action. You will be able to see them taking daily walks, participating in enrichment activities, embarking on adventures and interacting with staff and volunteers. As always, our Adoption Counselors are on hand to give first-hand knowledge of our residents to help you find your perfect match.

What do you mean when you say the Dog Adoption Floor is closed?

  • What we really mean is that our Dog Adoption Floor is simply closed to the public. We still have plenty of dogs on our Adoption Floor waiting for homes and our normal dog adoption operations are not affected. We are simply asking the public to view our dogs differently to minimize their stress and improve their wellbeing.

When will we be able to see the dogs again?

  • While the Dog Adoption Floor will remain closed to the public, we are happy to show off our dogs! Other ways to see our dogs include:
    • Viewing dogs in our Multi-Dog Rooms.
    • Watching dogs socialize in playgroups in our Outreach Center.
    • Watching videos on our TV monitors and tablets to see our dogs in action.
    • Monitoring residents on our website and on social media.

We drove here specifically to see the dogs, now what?

  • No problem! There are many ways you can still see and learn about our dogs.
    • Experience our dogs virtually on the various TV monitors.
    • Look for the dogs in our Multi-Dog Rooms just past the Adoption Desk.
    • Look through the windows into our Outreach Center to see if a playgroup or a training is in progress.
    • Look for informational binders located at our Adoption Desk.
    • Speak with an Adoption Counselor for information on our adoptable dogs.

How am I supposed to choose a dog to consider for adoption if I can’t see them?

  • Honestly, we believe you will get a much better idea of the energy level and personality of our resident dogs by viewing videos of them interacting under normal conditions rather than in a kennel environment which can be distracting or causing atypical excitability. Our Adoption Counselors know the personalities of the dogs and are happy to guide you through the videos and photos so we can make a good match for you and your family.

We don’t have a computer, how are we supposed to know which dogs you have available for adoption if we can’t see them?

  • You can also access our website and our adoptable animal pages on any smart phone. If that is not possible, please stop by and visit us in person. To see who’s available for adoption, look for informational binders located at our Adoption Desk or speak with an Adoption Counselor for information on our adoptable dogs.

If I want to see a dog, what do I need to do?

  • The first step in adopting a dog is to fill out an application. Applications can be found on our website and completed online or in person at the Adoption Desk. Our Adoption Counselors will be happy to assist you with next steps or you may set up an appointment to meet with a Counselor at a time that works best for you and your family.

Can I see a dog even if I’m not interested in adopting one?

  • Our priority is to focus on prospective adopters so we can find homes for our dogs as quickly as possible. However, you may always:
    • Experience our dogs virtually on the various TV monitors.
    • Look for the dogs in our Multi-Dog Rooms just past the Adoption Desk.
    • Look through the windows into our Outreach Center to see if a playgroup or a training is in progress.
    • Look for informational binders located at our Adoption Desk.
    • Speak with an Adoption Counselor for information on our adoptable dogs.
