Last October we proudly unveiled the name of our new wellness center – the Howard Ash Animal Wellness Center. It will likely come as no surprise that Howard is the lead donor of our campaign as well as the campaign’s Honorary Chair. We are so grateful to him for his financial support of this project, but Howard’s commitment is so much more than money. It is rooted in a love and dedication much deeper.

Although Howard has called Pittsburgh home for many years, he has lived and traveled throughout much of the world. It is this experience of interacting with many other cultures that kindled a compassion and concern for animals. This seedbed of experience blossomed when as an adult he came across two young kittens – Butch and Sam – whom he brought into his home and who quickly stole his heart.

Around the same time, Howard joined Animal Friends at our previous Strip District location, first as a dog walker, then a cat socializer. He donated his time and his resources, and soon became a valued member of our Board of Directors.

Through the love and eventual heartbreaking loss of his beloved Butch and Sam, Howard was moved to become significantly more involved with Animal Friends. As a way to heal from the loss, Howard began fostering cats and kittens in need, loving them and learning to let them go to their adoptive homes. And then along came Tyson.

Tyson was a very large, hard-to-place male cat. Tyson was particular about who was in his circle of friends. Howard was intrigued by Tyson and soon fostered and subsequently adopted him. As Howard would say, “Tyson changed my life. He taught me that it’s not about the ‘things’ in life. What truly matters is Tyson.”

And through these lessons of loss and love, Howard understood that the love of a pet knows no income level or socio-economic status. He recognized that there are too many pet owners struggling to find access to affordable spay/neuter and basic wellness care. He knew that had to change.

And thanks to Howard’s generosity – and the new Howard Ash Animal Wellness Center – it soon will.
