ToonSeum’s The Dog Days of Summer

Join Animal Friends at the ToonSeum on September 2 to help celebrate their Dog Days of Summer exhibit going on now through September 19! The Dog Days of Summer: Cartoon Canines features over 50 pieces of original comic strip, animation, and cartoon art of the most famous dogs of all time. Spanning over 100 years of illustrated history, this family-friendly exhibit is surely the largest gathering of these characters in one doghouse. Animal Friends will be on hand to showcase adoptable animals and raffle off your chance to win $5,000, $1,000 or 4 Steelers tickets. Doggie Days

Help support Animal Friends and take your dog for a swim at the same time! Join us at Chapel Gate Swim Club on Tuesday, September 7 from 5 to 8pm. For just $10, your dogswill get to frolic in the pool before it's drained for the winter and enjoy the run of the grounds! 100% of the proceeds benefit Animal Friends!


Animal Friends’ Last Splash of Summer!

Everyone's asking! When is this year’s Last Splash of Summer? Animal Friends' annual pool party for dogs is one of Pittsburgh's favorite events--and our quickest to sell out! This year, the surf's up on Saturday, September 11 when Animal Friends' Last Splash of Summer returns to Sandcastle in Homestead. Each year before Sandcastle Water Park closes for the season, they open their pools to dogs for the ultimate skinny dip. Don't miss the line of Labs leaping into the deep end, the Beagles beelining for the baby pool or the furry frenzy when the pools flood with Fidos. Reading with Rover dogs at the Sewickley Harvest Festival

Animal Friends’ Reading with Rover teams are participating with our friends the Laughlin Children's Center and the Sewickley Public Library during the Sewickley Harvest Festival on Saturday, September 11. Stop by from 10:00 – 2:00 at the "World of Words" tent located at Broad and Thorn Streets to meet Reading with Rover dogs, Laughlin Center experts encouraging literacy and communications skills, and the Sewickley Public Library’s children's librarian for stories and a simple craft.  No registration necessary.

Bullypalooza

Sunday, September 19 from noon - 4pm | Animal Friends
All dog and people-friendly bully breed canines and their families are invited to an afternoon of fun and games, including Musical Dogs; Sit, Stay and Lei; Dress-a-Bully; a best kisser contest; weight pulling; bobbing for hot dogs and more! There will be treats for our four-footed friends and prizes for the top dogs in each competition.

A new addition this year is Bully Doga: yoga for you and your bully! No prior yoga experience is necessary; just bring a large beach towel, some treats, leash and a willingness to learn! Space is limited; first come, first serve. This class will take place at 2 pm.

Canine Good Citizen certification testing will be available from 1 pm – 3 pm. If your Bully is a true ambassador for his breed and knows basic manners and commands (sit, stay, down, come when called, meets other dogs politely and accepts petting and brushing by others), he may be a candidate for this prestigious title.  An AKC-certified tester will be on-site to test your pooch if you think he is ready for the challenge. Hollywood Hopsters Adopt-a-Thon

Lights! Camera! Bunnies! These rabbits are ready for their closeups and are ready to meet you! Join us in our Outreach center for a Hollywood-themed bunny adoption event. Our adoption counselors will be on hand to discuss the basics of bringing home a rabbit, what they eat, grooming, litter box information, toys, treats, and more! And enjoy the sight of our celebrity bunnies mixing and mingling with each other in an open environment. It’s a great way to learn more about our long-eared stars!


Paws for the Cause hosted by Ingomar United Methodist Church and Hair Peace Charities  
Sunday, September 26 | 1:00pm | Ingomar Church's Outdoor Chapel on West Ingomar Rd., Franklin Park
Fetch your dogs, cats, fish, birds, hamsters or other pets! Your pet will be individually blessed by a pastor at this family-friendly event. Then enjoy an afternoon of pet games, contests, exhibits, demos, Sniff n Shop, plus a special prize for the pet that shows the best support to cancer survivors. Meet adoptable animals from Animal Friends, too! This event is free but registration is required at www.IngomarChurch.org. First 100 registrants get a free t-shirt. One shirt per family.


Blessing of the Animals
Sunday, October 3 (rain or shine!) at noon | Animal Friends

Join us as we celebrate the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, birds and the environment. Bring your four-footed angel and join us at the gazebo as we honor our pets with a special blessing. You are also invited to bring a photo of the pet(s) you have loved and lost for a special memorial blessing. For everyone’s safety, dogs must be on a leash (no retractable leashes, please).  Cats, rabbits and exotics must be in carriers. Saint Francis of Assisi medals, raffles and refreshments will be available for purchase. No registration is needed; just show up! There is no cost to attend the Blessing of the Animals.


Howl-o-Ween Pet Parade and Costume Party

Sunday, October 10 | noon – 3:00 p.m. |  Vietnam Veterans Shelter in Schenley Park in Oakland
It’s the 16th annual Howl-O-Ween pet parade and costume party, where happy dogs, cats and rabbits of all shapes and sizes will be gathering in their Halloween attire. The Howl-O-Ween party will feature pet photos, a pet costume contest and parade, refreshments, games for the whole family and goodies for pets and pet owners.  Costumes for both pets and their people are strongly encouraged.  Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in a number of categories. Dog Speed Dating Adopt-a-Thon

Meet your perfect match at our Dog Speed Dating afternoon! We’re trotting out our most eligible canine bachelor and bachelorettes and they’re excited to meet you! Keep track of your favorites on our Speed Dating Scorecards and enjoy some snacks and drinks. But be ready– our dogs aren’t just looking for a one-night stand…they want to find their forever homes!

Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists Dr. Dodman, founder and Director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at Tufts University, appears regularly on radio and television, including: 20/20, Oprah, The Today Show, Good Morning America, Dateline, World News with Peter Jennings, Discovery Channel, NOVA and Animal Planet. In addition, Dr. Dodman is a columnist for the American Kennel Club’s quarterly publication, AKC Family Dog. Dr. Dodman also writes a column for Martha Stewart’s Body and Soul magazine. Dr. Dodman has also authored 7 books including “The Dog Who Loved Too Much,” “Dogs Behaving Badly” and The Cat Who Cried for Help.” This program is ideal for Veterinarians, Vet Techs, Behaviorists, Animal Trainers, Owners and Hobbyists.
